Challenges faced by farmers
Problems
Available statistics shows that about 2% of world milk production is produced in Africa. In Nigeria, more than 70% of the milk consumed is imported. In spite of this low continental and national output, higher proportion (95%) of Nigeria’s pastoralist (Fulani) still focus on producing meat rather than milk partly due to limited access to information and opportunities in dairy farming. Available solutions are traditional, and they are not targeted at leveraging digital technology to increase access to information and unlock opportunities for nomadic dairy farmers, youths and investors in the dairy sector.
Solution
mDairy Digital Platform
mDairy is an integrated mobile technology platform (SMS, IVR, App) aimed at increasing access of dairy farmers to real-time, accurate and verified dairy information and services in their preferred local languages. mDairy uses its platform to capture the data of dairy farmers; record and track litres of milk produced and supplied to dairy companies; disperse epidemic alert; prevention tips on animal health; milk hygiene; nutrition guides, vaccination reminder; grazing path location; artificial insemination etc. It serves as a one-stop-shop for dairy farmers to get all the information they need.
mDairy works both online and off-line and aims to unlock job opportunities in the dairy sector and improve the livelihood and access to market of dairy farmers through technology.
